B) Discussion on Job Preparation

Lecture Notes:

5”W”: WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHY

  • Who: research about who you are going to work for; work on how you can approach them directly;

  • What: what you are going to offer them.(your expectations); what they are expecting of you;

  • Where: research the where about your job location;

  • When: good time to potentially find that there’s availability for work is from December and February; do specific research of a company(do they have the space for you at present);

  • Why : why is this company? Why the company right for you? Why are you the right employee for them.

The application

  • All too frequently applications can be rejected without even a need to open the resume/CV or portfolio, especially when sent through email;

  • The importance of writing a considered, formal and polite cover letter cannot be understated;

  • The letter or application establishes a number of basic questions to an employer.

Basic check list:

  1. Is the applicant careful; have they checked their work?

  2. Is the applicant able to be trusted to write a letter on behalf of this company?

  3. Is the applicant able to do research and ensure that they are able to establish the correct information?

  4. Is the applicant able to simply and efficiently convey the necessary information without confusion or upset?

  5. Is the applicant really interested in the company or have they just written a standard email to many companies.

Keys:

  • Interviews are about making personal ‘impressions’.

  • You need to maximize the POSITIVE and minimize the NEGATIVE.

  • A prospective employer is not interested in what you know(is very little), but rather what they think you can learn quickly.

How to leave better personal ‘impressions’

  1. Appearance

  2. Preparedness

  3. Professionalism

  4. Flexibility / Adaptability

  5. Suitability

D) Discussion on Interview Questions

Description: Discussion #3 - What questions you would want to ask a future employer in an interview? ( 10 minutes group discussion )

Lecture Notes:

-Employers always attend to ask what you want to hear.

What did we learn?

  • Objectives Behavior

  • Professionalism / Regulations / Business / Procedures / Salary / Jobs / Timekeeping / Preparedness / Teamwork / Feedback

  • Preparation Application Interview

  • Who / What / Where / When / Why / Approach / Uniqueness / Content / Proofing / Professional Behavior

The decision of whether applicants get to be interviewed for jobs for which they apply is often made in seconds and is based on very simple delivery issues.

Frequently, well qualified applicants, with excellent portfolios and examination results are unable to obtain even a chance for the positions they desire purely through poor preparation in making their applications.

Companies receive hundreds of work applications, and are especially busy after graduation time, meaning that applicants need to be outstanding in their approach to getting noticed and ensuring they are not rejected for very simple errors.

It is quite astounding the number of letters of application received that demonstrate the following:

  • informal or casual language

  • short, terse and impolite introduction

  • incorrect company name

  • other company’s name

  • company name spell incorrectly

  • wrong addressee name

  • addressee name spell incorrectly

  • incorrect addressee gender

  • general spelling mistakes and poor grammar

  • falling to attach attachments

  • attachments that are too large

  • poorly written and laid out resume/cv
